Gumps Farm, in it’s current incarnation, celebrated it’s 10th anniversary in May 2006.

Gumps is situated on a beautifully diverse property spanning nearly 30 acres in area, owned by the same family since the late 1920’s. It is our intent through the operation of our retail farmstand to preserve this beautiful landmark and keep it from becoming a statistic in this age of disregard of our natural and historic treasures.

The hidden nature of this property at street level combined with our quaint name often give the uninitiated the impression that we are much smaller and less comprehensive than what we are. Our name “Gumps Farm” is actually a respectful tribute to our grandfather, Clarence Fuller, who was lovingly referred to as “Gump” by those in our family. Mr. Fuller was an important public presence in his time here, holding down many public offices in town over the years. Barely six months after the great stock market crash, “Gump” and his father, Irving Lewis Fuller, courageously answered the call of their life long dream and ventured in to business together creating “Fullers Farm”. “Fullers Farm” specialized in fresh poultry and produce which was trucked daily into the city to markets and residential accounts, as well as offering their poultry and produce to local customers by manning their own farmstand here in Norfolk.

The home base of their operation was located on this property, next door to our current operating site. In those days, they had several barns, two of which still exist behind the property’s original farm house which dates roughly to about 1798. This farmhouse still stands, however, sadly is no longer owned by our family, having been sold a few years ago.

According to a member of the Wrentham Historical Commission (Norfolk was originally known as North Wrentham), as well as some of our own research, this property is one of the most historically significant in our area dating back hundreds of years as an original back forty homestead. In those days a piece of land like this provided generations of family members with all that was necessary to sustain life; lumber for heat and buildings, water from their pond to irrigate crops, and plenty of open farmable land to produce food and let livestock graze. Prior to being inhabited in this manner, this property was known to have been home to Native Americans and evidences of their presence here centuries ago are still occasionally unearthed today, in areas that are as pristine and unharmed today as they were then. Unfortunately, two acres of the most serene and historical parts of this property have been sold to a group who intends to develop this acreage; this area was one of the most crucial areas of our preservation plans going forward.

Much of this property is as it has been likely for many thousands of years and we have tried while developing Gumps Farm as it is now to be respectful of those who have come before us.

Today Gumps Farm is a full service country themed farmstand and garden center. We have taken great care to establish a business that celebrates our quaint rural roots with none of the homogenized traits of mass quantity mega merchants. We do not and will not buy into the uniquely American philosophy that “bigger is better”. Our best customers are those who “get it” about what we are trying to provide to our community and the way we go about it. We have taken great care to provide our neighbors with the best possible products at the best prices in a setting that stimulates all of the senses; whether it be the peaceful sound of classical music playing, water cascading in our fish and lily-filled lagoon, the scents emanating from our country themed farmstand, the bountiful color and beauty of our healthy plants in our greenhouses and retail yard, visiting our llamas Nomar and Pedro or perhaps its all of our swaying palm trees; there is something for everyone to enjoy about a visit to Gumps Farm.
